Hanifa Lubega Nassaka’s impact story is set in Uganda, where opportunities for young people to study abroad are scarce. So when she got a golden chance in 2012, she grabbed it with all seriousness. Hanifah has always been a passionate female Ugandan with a drive to succeed. But when she was awarded the Tullow Group Scholarship managed by the British Council, she became even more passionate.
This year 2016 will be the third year since she graduated and returned to Uganda, and what she has achieved in that short time is truly impressive.
As soon as Hanifa touched down in Kampala with her newly minted UK degree, she immediately noticed that all was not well with her country’s oil and gas sector. There were no new jobs, and people who already had jobs were facing layoffs. It was clear that something had to be done, so Hanifa teamed up with Ambrose Ssentongo, her friend and fellow TGSS scholar and David Gantungo, a lawyer to find a solution. The result of their partnership is ENV-Tech Consult Limited, a company that provides Environment, Health and Safety consultancy services across a diverse range of sectors.
It didn’t take them long to get started and barely a year in to business, the company has carried out Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), and Environmental Audits for the largest institutions in the country. Their satisfied client list features institutions like Eaton Towers, Hima Cement, Leaf Tobacco & Commodities U Ltd, Meridiam Tobacco Ltd, Bamico Holdings Ltd, Kyoga Foundation, Amazima Ministries, SAMEG Chemical Products, Kyagalanyi Coffee Ltd, Jamal Ramji Coffee Curring Co. Ltd among others. That is an enviable list, for any brand new company. But their achievements do not stop with serving Uganda’s large organizations as they have recently won a contract with Rift Valley Railways Kenya-Uganda on a bioremediation project covering sites in Kenya and Uganda. Because their company grew so quickly, Hanifa and her partner are now able to employ locally trained graduates.
According to the friendly, Hanifa, this is only the beginning- “ENV-Tech consult is going to be among the top consulting firms in Uganda in few years, considering our team of competent practitioners and professionals, who are committed to offering quality services to their clients and have a passion to deliver beyond their clients` expectations” she envisions.
If the benefits of a UK education are to be used to solve local problems, then Hanifa is on the right track and we wish her the very best.
Hanifah and Ambrose were all awarded the Tullow Group Scholarship Scheme in Uganda in 2012. Hanifah obtained a Master’s degree in Oil & Gas Engineering while Ambrose obtained an MSc in Safety and Reliability Engineering from University of Aberdeen. Learn more about Env-Tech .
